The powers that be at Preston Council are looking to help connect people with the history of the city through the latest technology, namely the all-conquering iPhone.

Preston City Council has teamed up with UCLan, JISC and Preston and South Ribble Civic Trust to launch a free app dedicated to the city's blue plaque sites.

Visitors and residents can use the software to help them plan a tour of the city's key historical destinations - paying homage to individuals such as Benjamin Franklin and Richard Arkwright - accessing maps, photos, audio clips and relevant Wikipedia links.

The app also contains information on other cultural hotspots such as Harris Museum & Art Gallery, the Guildhall and various shopping, travel and leisure facilities.

Phil Holifield of UCLan said the development followed on the heels of the institutions own iPhone app (itself a UK first),adding: “We’re delighted to have worked on this application for the city as Preston has so much history to share.

"From a founding father of the USA, to the birth of the industrial revolution and even the suffragettes, Preston has many interesting stories to tell and this technology is just perfect to showcase it.”
